What Diaspora Landlords Should Know About Owning Property in Lagos
13 October 2026 · Noblemen Networth Management
Owning property in Lagos while living abroad can build real wealth, or create years of stress. The difference is usually how it is managed.
1. Keep your documents safe and complete
Hold certified copies of your title, survey plan, building approval and receipts. Store originals securely, never with tenants or caretakers.
2. Vet every tenant
Employment checks, references and guarantors protect you from arrears and damage.
3. Collect rent through a traceable account
Avoid cash and personal accounts of relatives. Insist on statements.
4. Maintain before it breaks
Roofs, plumbing and electrical faults are cheaper to fix early.
5. Know your obligations
Land Use Charge and other levies should be paid on time to avoid penalties.
6. Get regular reports
Photos, video and a written statement at least every quarter.
A typical case we handle
A couple in Germany found their Ikorodu property sublet without permission and in poor repair. We documented the condition, served proper notice, recovered possession lawfully, renovated and re-let to a vetted family. They now receive quarterly reports with photos.
